Pass Plus

 What is Pass Plus

Pass Plus logoPass-Plus is a training scheme, developed by the Driving Standards Agency, to help the newly qualified driver to:

  • speed up the process of gaining "quality" driving experience in a relatively safe environment, especially in areas where you may have little experience (such as Motorway driving).
  • acquire a positive driving style (including accepting responsibility and taking extra care of other road users);
  • potentially reduce the risk of being involved in a road accident
  • save money on certain car insurance premiums.

After passing your test, the Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) registered with the Pass-Plus Scheme will then take you for a minimum of six modules (lessons) during which you will cover essential subjects such as:

  • Town Driving
  • All-weather driving
  • Out of town driving and rural roads
  • Night driving
  • Dual Carriageway driving
  • Motorway driving.

Provided your instructor is satisfied you have achieved a good standard in all six modules, and are displaying the essential skills that Positive Driving requires, such as:

  • improved observation
  • the ability to anticipate hazards and take suitable action
  • care, courtesy and consideration for other road users...

There is no test at the end - the school will sign off your training form and send it to the Driving Standards Agency, who will in turn send you a Pass-Plus certificate. You can then use your Pass-Plus certificate to reduce your car insurance premiums or obtain an extra no claims bonus (Pass-Plus-supporting insurers only) . This could more than cover the cost of the Pass-Plus lessons.

 Insurance Companies Supporting Pass Plus

insurersMotor insurers that support the Pass Plus scheme will give you a substantial discount on your motor insurance policy. Insurers will give you at least a one-year's no claims bonus for comprehensive, third party fire and theft and third party policies as soon as you insure your own car. The saving could more than cover the cost of the extra lessons

You can defer the no-claims bonus for two years if you currently drive under someone else's policy. This means that if you buy a car within two years of completing a Pass Plus course, and have not had any claims in the meantime, your first premium will be reduced by the extra one year's no claim bonus.

Insurers representing over 60% of the UK private car market have agreed to these discounts. The insurers currently supporting Pass Plus are*:

  • AA Insurance
  • BSM Insurance Services
  • BTE Lawline
  • Churchill
  • Co-operative Insurance Services (CIS)
  • Direct Line
  • Waveney Insurance (Instructor Isurance) (01603753888 -
  • Ecclesiastical (car insurance just for girls)
  • Norwich Union
  • Pearl
  • Privilege
  • Provident Insurance plc
